Emergency Services

It is reassuring to know that if you or a loved one is faced with a medical emergency, the staff at Chester River Hospital Center will provide the highest level of medical care.

Our emergency care professionals are supported by the most advanced technology to diagnose, treat and heal the growing numbers of patients who enter our doors, be it for stroke, heart attack, a broken wrist or any other type of medical emergency.

This is especially evident in the newly expanded Emergency Department which, driven by patient need, has grown from five treatment stations to 11 stations. Our Emergency Department is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and receives all patients.

Upon arrival in the Emergency Department, an evaluation (triage) is done by one of the Emergency Department nurses. This confidential evaluation will include questions about the patient`s illness or injury, any symptoms he or she may be experiencing, past medical history, current medications and allergies as well as a check of blood pressure, pulse and temperature. The Emergency Department staff takes each patient`s illness or injury very seriously, however, Emergency Department patients are seen based on the severity of their illness or injury rather than upon the order of their arrival. As a result, patients may be asked to wait in the waiting room until a treatment room is available for them.

Once an Emergency Department patient is taken to a treatment room, the Emergency Department physician will conduct a thorough examination and initiate care.

One of the first people patients see in the Emergency Department is the physician, who will make an initial visit to initiate care. Patients will also be visited at the bed side by an Admissions representative who will take care of any needed paperwork. Once care commences, patients may see a variety of healthcare workers depending on the type of care needed.

Depending on the needs of the patient, treatment will be provided in the:

General Treatment Area
Cardiac Care Room
Minor Surgical Station
Gynecological Treatment Room
Orthopedic/Cast Room
Behavioral Health Treatment Room

If admission to the hospital is necessary, the patient`s personal physician will be contacted and arrangements made for admission to one of the hospital`s inpatient rooms. If the patient does not have a personal physician, arrangements will be made with one of the physicians in attendance.
